What is our Automatic Shift Detection Algorithm in Ice Hockey
Tracking player shifts and time on ice is essential for managing performance, but manually creating those shifts can be time consuming.
With Catapult’s Automatic Shift Detection for both Pro and Pro Plus customers, wearable data is used to identify active player shifts during games based on movement patterns. It’s important to note that these are active shifts: representing the periods of true on ice movement and not the entire shifts typically reported in broadcast or manual statistics.
Active shifts exclude stoppages such as whistles, faceoffs, TV timeouts, and bench delays, focusing only on the time players are actively skating or competing. These automatically detected active shifts are saved as annotations, providing valuable insights into both total on ice load and individual shift intensity.
All detected shifts can then be imported into Focus as tags, allowing coaches to instantly view the corresponding video for each player’s shift.
The result is a complete view of player workload without the manual effort.
