What are Maximum Intensity Intervals?
Maximum Intensity Intervals (MII) are time periods of peak physical demands that are identified based on Distance and Player Load. The duration of the time periods are preset by the user in the OpenField Cloud - Settings - Teams section (by default 1, 3 and 5 minutes). The Maximum Intensity Interval feature identifies and analyzes these periods of peak physical demands. For example, the user can identify and analyze the greatest amount of distance covered in the first half for a 5 minute interval.
This type of analysis is also described as ‘Worst Case Scenario’ or ‘Peak Match Demands’ and has been approached in different ways, each with the goal of being able to identify the passages of play with the greatest physical output across a range of parameters.
Maximum Intensity Intervals are calculated using a rolling window methodology and is derived from our 10Hz Distance and Player Load data. For a Maximum Intensity Interval to be calculated the period must be at least the duration of the maximum intensity interval. For example if your interval time is 60 seconds, the period must be at least 60 seconds.
How are Maximum Intensity Intervals applicable?
Maximum Intensity Intervals enable the user to identify and analyze the peak physical demands placed on an athlete over a defined duration of time. Quantifying these periods of peak physical demands (or Maximum Intensity Intervals) in a match context provides valuable information that can be used to set benchmarks or targets in training. Subsequently, analysis of Maximum Intensity Intervals in training can help athlete monitoring and training prescription by enabling users to answer questions such as:
-
What was my athlete's Maximum Intensity Interval in this training drill? How did that compare to their Maximum Intensity Interval in a match?
-
Which training drills can I include to ensure athletes are exposed to Maximum Intensity Intervals that will meet or exceed those in a match?
How to set up Maximum Intensity Intervals?
-
The user must have OpenField console version 2.4 or later installed on their computer as well as the Maximum Intensity Interval module added to their account.
(The MII module can be confirmed or added by a Catapult Support agent.)
-
Maximum Intensity Interval duration (in seconds) can be set in the OpenField Cloud for three different Intervals for both Player Load and Distance.
-
Navigate to the OpenField Cloud > Settings > Teams.
-
Click on the Team you want to set the durations for.
-
Navigate to Maximum Intensity Interval - Distance Interval 1 (Seconds).
-
In the text box below, enter in the duration you want for your first interval. (i.e. 60 seconds).
-
Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the following 6 Intervals as shown in the screenshot below:
-
Click Save.
-
Complete a Fast sync from the OpenField console to sync these changes made in the Cloud onto the Console.
-
If you would like to analyze historical activities using this feature, please reprocess those activities in your OpenField Console.
- If the Maximum Intensity Interval durations are changed at any time, you will need to complete steps 7 and 8 (fast sync and reprocess) again to allow the changes to take effect in the Console.
-
Detecting and Viewing Maximum Intensity Intervals in the OpenField Console
Detecting and analyzing Maximum Intensity Intervals in the OpenField Console can only be done post-activity.
-
Open the Activity with the OpenField Console.
- Graph the desired athletes. See Graphing Data for more information.
- Right click on one of the Athlete's Name at the end of the Velocity Trace/Graph then select Graph Maximum Intensity Intervals > Select Player Load or Distance > Select Interval 1, 2 or 3.
- Hover over each event flag for a summary of the Maximum Intensity Interval.
-
Create a new Dashboard if desired.
-
In any Dashboard, right click on any white space on the Dashboard > Select New Widget > Select Efforts / Events > Maximum Intensity Intervals - Distance or Maximum Intensity Intervals - Player Load depending on the data you want to view. See Console Widgets for more information.
-
Select the athlete(s) from the drop down menus to view data for each individual athlete. Clicking on each Interval will bring the Player Head to the start of the Interval, this allows for alignment with any imported video. Please see our How to Sync Video with GPS data for Analysis for more information.
-
Fast Sync from the OpenField Console to send data to the Cloud for analysis.
- Maximum Intensity Intervals will can be exported to a CSV through the Widgets > Settings > Basics > Select CSV.
Viewing Maximum Intensity Intervals on the OpenField Cloud
Analyzing Maximum Intensity Intervals in the OpenField Cloud can only be done post Activity.
-
Navigate to the OpenField Cloud and click the Settings icon for the widget you want to use to view the data.
-
From the Parameters Tab, select any metric from the Maximum Intensity Interval category.
Widget settings > Parameter Tab > Maximum Intensity Interval > select any Parameter.
-
Load the appropriate Activity(s) and view the Data in the widget.
