Why set absolute and relative velocity bands?
A second set of velocity bands can be used to present your velocity effort, distance and duration information for each of your athletes in absolute and relative terms. Please note, it is important to reprocess your historical data when using relative velocity bands (set 2) for the first time. See How to set up a Relative set of velocity bands (second set).
Every game has different demands, each position often has unique volume and intensity characteristics that can become misrepresented by a uniform global approach to applying speed thresholds. For example, using relative velocity bands, various studies have documented a significant increase in high and very high speed running volumes in players that have a lower maximum velocity and a significant decrease in high and very high speed running volumes in faster players, when compared with absolute thresholds.
The ability to compare players' velocity based performances across positional groups is also important for training and match play, therefore an absolute threshold approach is more suitable in this case.
How to set up an Absolute set of velocity bands
1. Log into the OpenField Cloud, select Settings from the main user interface.
2. Select the Bands tab from the sidebar of the Settings menu.
3. From the drop-down menu select Velocity.
4. Select all Athletes from the left, input Global Velocity Threshold Bands.
5. Click Apply To Selected Athletes.
Following the above steps, Velocity is now set up as your Absolute Velocity Bands (Global).
How to set up a Relative set of velocity bands (second set)
1. Log into the OpenField cloud, select Settings from the main user interface.
2. Select the Bands tab from the sidebar of the Settings menu.
3. From the drop-down menu select Velocity (Set 2).
4. Leave the team selected and tick the Use percentage tick-box. Enter in the % you wish to use.
5. Click Apply To Selected Athletes.
6. You'll notice this now enables the ability to enter in a Max Velocity per athlete.
7. Once you enter in a max velocity per athlete click Apply to Selected Athletes again.
8. Your bands will now be set to calculate percentage zones based off each individual's max.
Following the above steps, Velocity (Set 2) is now set up as your Relative Velocity Bands (individual).
