What is the Focus Importer?
The Focus Importer allows you to import a Focus .json file including all tag data into OpenField to view and analyse technical and tactical information alongside your physical data. This includes:
- Import Athlete Based Focus tags as annotations for High Rotation Sports - Import tags when each tag is an individual athlete to view physical outputs when they are on the field. This should be particularly useful in basketball and American football where athlete rotations are difficult to manage and often are already being tagged by the analyst, saving the user time and providing new insights into the true intensity during play.
- Import Tactical or Technical Based Focus tags as annotations for assessing load in different events of the game - Import tags based on technical or tactical based annotations (e.g. In-possession) to better understand the physical outputs during different phases of the game. Athletes can also be added to specific tags based on tag labels during import.

How to Import Focus Data into OpenField?
- Export your 'Session JSON' file from Focus. More information is available here.
- Upload your .json file to OpenField.
- Select the Editor > navigate to the activity you wish to import to from the side panel > hit Import Annotations.
- Hit Browse and select your .json file to import.
- You can now choose how you would like to import your tags as annotations:
- Tactical or Technical Based Focus Tags as Annotations - use this option if you are importing technical or tactical data such as phases of play, possession, shots, goals, etc.
- Athlete Based Focus Tags as Annotations - use this option if you are importing athlete based tags to aid with rotation management. In this flow, annotations will be created as the name of each of the athletes, with each annotation assigned to the corresponding individual.
Importing Tactical or Technical Based Focus Tags as Annotations
Use this option if you are importing technical or tactical data such as phases of play, possession, shots, goals, etc. You'll need to complete the following steps to import:
Step 1 - Align Focus Tags to Periods
You can align tags with periods in one of two ways:
- Timing Tag - choose a timing tag to align to the start time of a period/s. You can find out more about timing tags and how to set them up in Focus here.
- Focus Tag - choose any tag row to align a specific tag start time to the start time of a period/s.
Note: You will only need to align to a single point if your analyst tags footage continuously otherwise for every break you will need to add a point of alignment.
Step 2 - Select Tags to Import
Here you can search, select and rename tags you would like to import:
- Use the Search box to filter the table for a specific tag/s.
- Use the check box to select any tag/s to import.
- Finally, rename your annotations (optional).
Step 3 - Assign Athletes to Tags (optional)
Here you can optionally assign athletes to tags based on either:
- Tag types - use if there is another tag row within Focus containing athlete participation data.
- Labels within tags - use if the tags you are importing already have athletes assigned to them as labels.
Once you have selected how you would like to assign your athletes, you can then map your tags/labels directly to your OpenField athletes using the dropdowns. Any assignments made previously will be stored for future selection. Once complete hit Import to start the import process and you will return to the Editor page (this can take up to 5 minutes).
